Nicolas Gasca, a 25-year-old resident of Greenfield, California, tragically lost his life on September 1, 2020. He was fatally shot in the parking lot of his apartment complex located on the 200 block of 13th Street. The incident occurred in the evening, and the circumstances surrounding his death were initially unclear, prompting a thorough investigation by local law enforcement.
The investigation into Gasca's death led to the arrest of Jonathan Rojas, a 19-year-old suspect, in January
2022. Rojas was linked to the murder of Gasca through extensive police work, which included reviewing hours of security footage, interviewing witnesses, and executing multiple search warrants. Rojas was also connected to another homicide that occurred on December 31, 2020, where Ricardo Gonzalez was shot and killed while sitting in his car on Heidi Drive in Greenfield. Additionally, Rojas was implicated in the attempted murder of an 18-year-old man who was shot while walking on 13th Street in February 2021.
Rojas was arrested in Salinas and booked into the Monterey County Jail with a bail set at over $2 million. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and participation in a criminal street gang. Due to the severity of the charges and the fact that the crimes were committed when Rojas was a minor, there is a possibility that he could be tried as an adult. The Monterey County District Attorney's Office is involved in the case, and the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to seek additional information from the public.
The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings have brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims, including the Gasca family. The Greenfield Police Department has expressed gratitude to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Task Force and the Salinas Police Department for their assistance in the investigation. Despite the arrest, the community remains vigilant, and law enforcement continues to encourage anyone with further information to come forward to aid in the pursuit of justice for Nicolas Gasca and the other victims.
