Antonio Guero Martinez, a 35-year-old resident of Escondido, California, tragically lost his life on September 22, 2018, in a shooting incident at Pounders Sports Pub. The altercation began when Antonio and his younger brother, Manuel Eliseo Martinez, left the bar in their car at high speed, prompting a patron to reprimand them for their reckless driving. This confrontation escalated when the brothers returned to the bar to confront the patron.
During the ensuing altercation, Antonio physically attacked the patron while Manuel brandished a firearm. In the chaos, Manuel fired two shots, one of which struck Antonio, leading to his death. Another individual involved in the altercation was also injured but survived.
Manuel Eliseo Martinez, who was 32 at the time, was immediately identified as the shooter by witnesses at the scene. He attempted to flee but was apprehended by the police after a brief foot chase. Manuel, a documented gang member, had a history of violent crimes and had been deported from the United States multiple times. At the time of the shooting, he was wanted for several other violent offenses committed in Escondido over the previous year.
Following his arrest, Manuel faced numerous charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon to commit an assault, and being a gang member in possession of a firearm. In late 2019, he was convicted of these charges and subsequently sentenced to more than 135 years to life in state prison. The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gang violence and illegal re-entry into the United States, as Manuel had been deported six times before the incident.
