The SUV, driven by Dulcich, eventually crashed into another vehicle, and a passenger from the car got out and opened fire on Dulcich. The shooter then attempted to shoot a witness at point-blank range, but the gun malfunctioned. The witness managed to escape after a physical altercation with the gunman, who then fled the scene.
The investigation into Dulcich's murder led to the arrest of Mariano Fernandez Perez, a 24-year-old man with alleged gang affiliations. Perez was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and shooting at an occupied motor vehicle. Court documents revealed that Perez had threatened the witness who saw the murder, and a vehicle registered to Perez's mother was found burned near the Kern-Tulare county line, matching the description of the suspect's car.
