On July 12, 2017, the body of 21-year-old D'Angelo Charon was discovered on the side of Twin Oaks Valley Road near Gopher Canyon Road in Vista, California. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Charon had died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide. The investigation quickly led to the arrest of two suspects: Shyrehl Wesley, 20, and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Sheffah Chevis.
Wesley, who was on parole for armed robbery at the time, was apprehended at a home on Alabama Street in San Diego, while Chevis was arrested at a residence on Clairemont Drive.
Prosecutors revealed that Charon, Wesley, and Chevis were seen together at a liquor store in San Diego early on the morning of the murder. Chevis then drove the two men to a remote location in Vista, where Wesley allegedly shot Charon multiple times. Investigators found 40 bullet casings at the scene, and Charon's cell phone was later recovered from Mission Bay, where it had been discarded by the suspects. A .40-caliber handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, was also found in Chevis's possession. The gun's serial number had been obliterated, and it had been wiped clean of fingerprints.
In court, Wesley pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and was held on $6 million bail. Chevis was also charged with murder and was booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility. Despite the arrests, prosecutors did not disclose a motive for the killing. The case proceeded to trial, where Wesley was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 80 years to life in state prison for the murder of D'Angelo Charon. The tragic incident highlighted the violent consequences of unresolved conflicts and the severe penalties for those who commit such heinous acts.
