Jose Ricardo Sahagun, a 44-year-old resident of Norwalk, California, tragically lost his life on April 29, 2017, during a random shooting spree that spanned multiple cities including Whittier, Pico Rivera, and La Mirada. Sahagun, who was known for his dedication to helping others, was killed while sitting in his car at a traffic light. The shooting spree, which left several others injured, was carried out by Alejandro Lazo, 21, and Reyna Gomez, 26, both of Whittier.
The couple, who were self-described gang members, embarked on this senseless rampage, targeting innocent people at random.
The violent spree began around 1 p.m. when Lazo and Gomez, driving a white Kia Rio, fired shots at a pedestrian in South Whittier. They then carjacked a green SUV in Pico Rivera and continued their rampage, shooting at multiple locations. Sahagun was shot multiple times while waiting at a traffic light in La Mirada, and despite being transported to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The couple's actions were described as unprovoked and random, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Following the shooting spree, Lazo and Gomez were arrested and charged with one count of murder, 14 counts of attempted murder, and one count of carjacking. Gomez also faced an additional charge of torture for shooting a man in the groin. Both suspects were held in custody as they recovered from injuries sustained during their arrest.
