Luis Saldana, a 28-year-old Latino, tragically lost his life on April 2, 2017, in Willowbrook, CA. The incident occurred in the 12700 block of South Avalon Boulevard. Saldana was driving north on Avalon Boulevard with his wife in the front passenger seat when a black Honda collided with the rear of their car shortly after midnight. The collision was believed to be the result of a street race involving the black Honda and another vehicle.
Although the crash itself was minor, it quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. Two men exited the Honda and began assaulting Saldana, striking him with their fists. As Saldana's wife attempted to intervene, a white sedan approached, and someone inside the vehicle fired a gun, hitting Saldana in the chest. The assailants then returned to their Honda, reversed the car, and ran over both Saldana and his wife.
Deputies on patrol witnessed the incident and pursued the fleeing Honda, apprehending the two men a few blocks away. Saldana and his wife were transported to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for scrapes and bruises, while Saldana was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. The initial cause of death was uncertain, with authorities unsure whether it was due to the gunshot wound or the subsequent vehicular assault. However, the coroner later confirmed that Saldana died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The two men arrested at the scene were identified as David Evans, 21, and Darelle Burton, 24. They were initially detained on suspicion of murder but were released two days later due to insufficient evidence to file murder charges. The investigation into Saldana's death continued, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. Despite the arrests, the case highlighted the complexities and challenges of securing convictions in violent crimes, particularly when multiple factors contribute to the victim's death.
