Davion Gregory, a 24-year-old man from Carson, California, tragically lost his life on December 10, 2016. Gregory was attending a "Naughty or Nice Pajama Jam" party at a commercial warehouse on West Victoria Street. The event, which was advertised on social media as a pay-to-enter gathering, drew a crowd of around 160 people. As Gregory and two friends approached the warehouse entrance around 11:30 p.m., gunfire erupted. Gregory and his companions were struck by the bullets.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Gregory succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. on December 11. His friends survived their injuries and were later released from the hospital.
The investigation into Gregory's death revealed that he was involved in a gang, though it remains unclear whether the shooting was gang-related or if Gregory was the intended target. The chaotic scene at the warehouse, with many attendees fleeing and refusing to cooperate with authorities, complicated the investigation. Despite the presence of security guards and a DJ at the event, no one reported witnessing the shooting, and no weapons were recovered at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an extensive investigation. Detectives identified potential suspects and pursued various leads, but the case faced significant challenges due to the lack of cooperation from witnesses. The investigation took a notable turn when Darrell Caldwell, known as the rapper Drakeo The Ruler, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Caldwell, along with his associates, was accused of plotting to kill another rapper, RJ, at the party. However, RJ was not present at the event. The prosecution's case against Caldwell relied heavily on his music, social media activity, and covertly recorded conversations.
In July 2019, after a lengthy trial, Caldwell was acquitted of all charges related to Gregory's murder and the attempted murder of two other men injured in the shooting. The jury was hung on a separate charge of criminal street gang conspiracy, which the prosecution considered refiling. Caldwell's co-defendant, Mikell Buchanan, was convicted of murder and attempted murder with a gang enhancement and faced life without parole. The complex and high-profile nature of the case highlighted the difficulties in securing convictions in gang-related crimes, especially when witnesses are reluctant to come forward.
