Andy Steven Portillo, a 25-year-old Latino, was tragically shot to death on September 25, 2016, in Gardena, California. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of 152nd Street. In the hours leading up to his death, Portillo had been at the Mis Amigos bar on South Western Avenue, where he played pool and had a few drinks. Surveillance footage later revealed that he was followed by a man and a slow-moving SUV as he walked home with two women. The video showed the man getting into the SUV, which continued to follow Portillo. Moments later, the man exited the vehicle, ran towards Portillo, and shot him. The shooter and the two women then fled the scene in the SUV.
Despite the release of the surveillance video and appeals for information, the investigation faced significant challenges. The Gardena police did not immediately identify any suspects, and the motive for the shooting remained unclear. Portillo was not known to be involved in any gang activities, and there were no indications that he was robbed. His family and loved ones have been vocal in their calls for justice, expressing their grief and frustration over the senseless loss of an innocent life.
The case remains open, with detectives continuing to pursue leads and urging anyone with information to come forward.
