This altercation escalated into a high-speed chase through a nearby neighborhood, culminating in front of Sac’s Hot Dogs, a busy area with many pedestrians, including Girl Scouts selling
cookies. The other driver opened fire, striking Reyes multiple times. A young girl in Reyes' car was also shot but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Eric Reyes was known for his academic excellence, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while working at Kohl’s department store. His family and friends confirmed that he was not involved in any gang activities or drug use, a fact supported by the police, who stated that the shooting did not appear to be gang-related. Despite the bustling scene of the crime, few witnesses have come forward, leaving many questions unanswered about the motive behind the shooting.
Three days after the homicide, three young men were arrested in Vallejo following a high-speed chase with sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers. Among them was 19-year-old Jacob Rodriguez, who was later identified as the primary suspect in Reyes' death. Rodriguez was charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted murder. The case against Rodriguez was largely built on the description provided by the female passenger in Reyes' car during the shooting.
