Tony was pronounced dead at the scene, while Juan succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital shortly after.
The incident shocked the local community, as the Aguilar brothers were well-known and had deep roots in the neighborhood, despite having moved to Littlerock in the Antelope Valley. The park was bustling with people at the time of the shooting, and investigators spoke to over 50 witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. The suspects fled the scene in two vehicles, a dark-colored SUV and a two-door sedan, and were last seen driving south on Ditman Avenue.
The investigation into the murders revealed that Juan Aguilar was a member of a local gang, leading authorities to initially suspect that the shooting might have been gang-related. However, it remained unclear whether the brothers were targeted due to gang affiliations or if they knew their attackers personally. The case took a significant turn when Pedro Vasquez, a 24-year-old Latino man from Bell Gardens, was arrested and charged with the murders. Vasquez was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder in September 2017. The jury also determined that Vasquez had used a handgun in the killings, but prosecutors did not pursue a gang-related charge against him.
