Egan Ton, a 31-year-old resident of Rosemead, California, was tragically shot and killed on September 15, 2015, in the driveway of his home on Willard Avenue. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. and was witnessed by several neighbors. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Ton was a married father of two young children and worked as a security systems engineer.
He was well-regarded in his community, known for his generosity and technical expertise.
The investigation revealed that Ton was killed by a long-time friend, Dick Phat Duong, a 32-year-old man from San Gabriel. Witnesses reported seeing an Asian man dressed in black fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. When deputies located Duong a short distance away, he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. Duong was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after Ton was declared dead in his driveway. A semi-automatic weapon was found near Duong’s body.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as investigators and family members could not determine what led to the tragic event. Ton’s cousin, William Suen, mentioned that Ton and Duong had known each other since high school and had maintained a friendly relationship over the years. Despite this, there were no prior indications of any conflict between them.
The case was classified as a murder-suicide, and no further arrests or suspects were involved. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted a thorough investigation, but no additional litigations or law cases emerged from the incident. The community was left in shock, mourning the loss of a beloved family man and friend. A fundraising campaign was set up to support Ton’s wife and children, highlighting the community’s effort to come together in the wake of the tragedy.
