Lai Yeung Hang, 49 years old at the time, was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the incident. She and her son had checked into the hotel the night before the shooting. Investigators discovered a handgun at the scene, which was believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. Lai Hang was charged with one count of murder and was held in lieu of $2 million bail. She was scheduled to be arraigned in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pasadena Branch, on August 12, 2015.

Reports indicated that she believed there would be no one to care for her son, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, after her death. This belief allegedly led her to take the drastic step of ending her son's life. The case against Lai Hang was eventually dismissed after she passed away from cancer on December 11, 2017, at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
