In the summer of 2017, the life of Donta Cook, a 24-year-old Black man from Glen Burnie, Maryland, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of Sunday, July 30th, violence erupted outside of Sooner's Tavern on Hazel Avenue in Baltimore. It was there that Cook was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The late Sunday shooting added to what was already a violent year for the city, which saw a significant surge in homicides.
