Qui Jin Fang, a 43-year-old man, was tragically shot and killed on September 22, 2013, in Alhambra, California. The incident occurred in the 300 block of North Monterey Street, where Fang was found with gunshot wounds to his upper body in a parked vehicle inside a garage. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and saw an Asian man leaving the area in a white Mercedes-Benz. Fang was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 11:00 p.m.
A loaded handgun was discovered near the scene, and the police stopped the Mercedes, arresting two men and one woman on suspicion of murder.
The investigation revealed that Xia Lin, a 28-year-old gang member affiliated with the Bamboo United gang, was responsible for the murder. Lin approached Fang while he was sitting in his car and fired multiple shots, resulting in Fang's death. Lin then fled the scene, discarding a fanny pack containing the murder weapon, a .22 caliber gun with a silencer, and ammunition at a nearby movie theater. A woman found the fanny pack and later saw Lin searching for it, prompting her to call the police. Lin was apprehended by law enforcement as he was about to leave in the white Mercedes, with clothing matching the description of the shooter found in the vehicle.
The legal proceedings culminated in Lin being found guilty of first-degree murder on October 22, 2015. The jury also found true the allegations of gun and gang involvement. Lin was sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison on December 1, 2015. The case highlighted the violent activities of gang members in the area and the swift response of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect and securing a conviction.
