On February 19, 2013, 26-year-old Jeremy Lewis of Fullerton, California, was fatally shot during a tragic series of events in Orange County. The assailant, 20-year-old Ali Syed, initiated his violent spree early that morning by killing a woman identified as Courtney Aoki in his Ladera Ranch home. Following this initial act, Syed embarked on a series of carjackings and shootings across multiple locations.
After leaving his residence, Syed drove to Tustin, where he attempted a carjacking
at a gas station near the Santa Ana Freeway. He then continued to the Micro Center parking lot at Edinger and Newport. It was here that Jeremy Lewis, a construction worker, was present for his job. Syed approached Lewis, shot him fatally, and subsequently stole a utility truck from another individual at the scene. This individual was also shot but survived the encounter.
Authorities initially explored the possibility of a connection between Syed and Lewis. A witness reported that Lewis had received a phone call shortly before meeting Syed, leading to speculation that he might have been lured to the location. However, after reviewing phone records, investigators found no evidence of communication between the two prior to the incident. The investigation concluded that there was no relationship between Syed and Lewis, and that Lewis's death was a random act of violence.
The tragic events culminated when law enforcement officers located Syed in the stolen utility truck. As officers closed in, Syed exited the vehicle and took his own life. Throughout his rampage, Syed killed three individuals, including Jeremy Lewis, and injured several others before ending his own life.
