James Lowell Capoot, a 43-year-old police officer from Vallejo, California, tragically lost his life on November 17, 2011, while in the line of duty. Officer Capoot was engaged in a high-speed chase with a bank robbery suspect when he executed a PIT maneuver to disable the suspect's vehicle. The chase continued on foot, leading Capoot into a residential area where he was shot multiple times in the backyard of a residence.
Despite being transported to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries. Capoot's death was a significant loss to the Vallejo Police Department, where he had served for 19 years, and to the community he was deeply involved in.
The suspect in the case, Henry Albert Smith Jr., was apprehended near the scene shortly after the shooting. Smith was later convicted of the murder of Officer Capoot. In November 2015, he was sentenced to three life terms without the possibility of parole. The conviction and sentencing brought some measure of justice to Capoot's family and colleagues, though the loss remained deeply felt.
Officer Capoot's dedication to his community extended beyond his police work. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had previously served with the California Highway Patrol. In addition to his law enforcement career, Capoot was a beloved coach for the Vallejo High School varsity girls' basketball team, leading them to a championship in his second year. His commitment to his family, including his wife and three daughters, and his community was evident in all aspects of his life.
In the aftermath of his death, the community honored Capoot's memory in various ways. In January 2014, a section of Highway 37 was renamed the Police Officer James Capoot Memorial Highway. His legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
