Adrian Jose Castro Acosta, a 16-year-old from Menifee, California, tragically lost his life on June 11, 2011. He was found shot in the roadway of the 27900 block of Jefferson Avenue in Menifee early that Saturday morning. Upon arrival, police discovered Adrian with fatal gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another male juvenile was also found near the location with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
The
investigation into Adrian's death led to the arrest of two suspects. Walter Morales Cortez, a 22-year-old from Meadowbrook, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Adrian's death and attempted murder for the shooting of the second boy. Cortez was arrested shortly after the incident and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was held at the Southwest Detention Center with bail set at $1,500,000. If convicted, Cortez faced a potential sentence of 90 years to life in prison.
A second suspect, Lilia Teresa Rivas, a 28-year-old also from Meadowbrook, was arrested a few days later and charged with first-degree murder for Adrian's death and attempted murder for the shooting of the other juvenile. Rivas was held at the Robert Presley Detention Center with bail set at $1,000,000. She was due to be arraigned on June 20, 2011.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department conducted the investigation, with officers urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The case highlighted the tragic impact of gun violence on young lives and the community's efforts to seek justice for Adrian and his family.
