Nels Daniel "Dan" Niemi, a 42-year-old police officer with the San Leandro Police Department, tragically lost his life on July 25, 2005. Officer Niemi was responding to a disturbance call on Doolittle Drive around 11:00 PM. This was his second visit to the location that day. While speaking with some residents, a man drove up and engaged Officer Niemi in conversation. Without any warning, the man produced a handgun and shot Officer Niemi multiple times, resulting in his death.
The suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended the following day.
The suspect was later identified and convicted of first-degree murder in May 2007. He was subsequently sentenced to death. Officer Niemi had served with the San Leandro Police Department for three years and was known for his dedication and commitment to his duty. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. The community of San Leandro mourned his loss deeply, and a portion of Hays Street was renamed Dan Niemi Way in his honor.
