Sergeant Richard J. Helbush, a 34-year-old officer with the Lake County Sheriff's Office in California, tragically lost his life on May 2, 1981. On that fateful night, Sergeant Helbush was returning to the main office shortly after midnight when he noticed a vehicle with a flat tire along the roadway in an isolated area. Demonstrating his commitment to public service, he stopped to assist what he believed to be two stranded motorists.
Unbeknownst to him, the occupants of the vehicle, Robert Cox and Annika Deasy, were wanted for a murder in Stockton. As Sergeant Helbush returned to his patrol car, Cox shot him three times in the back, resulting in his immediate death.
Following the shooting, Cox and Deasy stole Sergeant Helbush's wallet, revolver, and patrol car. When dispatch could not reach Sergeant Helbush, other units were dispatched to search for him. They found his body at the scene, leading to a manhunt for the suspects. Another deputy soon located the stolen patrol vehicle and engaged in a pursuit that ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree. A gun battle ensued, during which Cox was wounded in the arm, and Deasy was taken into custody without injury.
The aftermath of this tragic event saw significant legal proceedings. Robert Cox, after being bound over for trial by preliminary hearing, committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell at the Lake County Jail on October 21, 1981. Annika Deasy faced legal consequences for her involvement in the crime, although specific details about her trial and sentencing are less documented. The murder of Sergeant Helbush left a profound impact on the community and law enforcement, with more than 300 uniformed peace officers attending his funeral. He was interred at Kelseyville Cemetery, remembered for his dedication and service.
