Jeannie Gustafson Mills, born Deanna Mertle, was a prominent defector from the Peoples Temple, a cult led by Jim Jones. She, along with her husband Al Mills and their children, left the Temple in 1974 after witnessing and experiencing severe abuses. The family legally changed their names to distance themselves from the cult.
