His death was a result of a violent incident that occurred at his home. On the night of December 7, LaGregory Grigges and his cousin Willie Whitsett attempted to rob Thomas, believing he had a substantial amount of money in a safe.
The two men, armed and determined, entered Thomas's home and demanded money. When Thomas refused to comply, a struggle ensued, leading to Grigges fatally shooting Thomas multiple times.
The investigation into Thomas's death quickly led to the arrest of LaGregory Grigges and Willie Whitsett. Witnesses, including Juanita Jones, who was present at the scene, provided crucial testimonies that helped piece together the events of that night. Jones recounted how the two men burst into the home, brandishing guns and demanding money.
