Martin Duque Anguiano, a 14-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on February 14, 2018, during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Martin was a freshman at the school and a proud member of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC). He was known for his ambition, kindness, and dedication, with dreams of becoming a U.S. Navy SEAL.
Martin was the son of Mexican immigrants and was raised in a loving, supportive family of seven.
On that fateful day, Martin was one of the 17 victims who lost their lives when a former student, Nikolas Cruz, opened fire at the school. Cruz, who was 19 years old at the time, used a semi-automatic rifle to carry out the attack. The shooting resulted in the deaths of 14 students and three staff members, and left many others injured.
Nikolas Cruz was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with 17 counts of first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. In October 2021, Cruz pleaded guilty to all charges. The case proceeded to the penalty phase, where the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. In November 2022, the judge formally sentenced Cruz to life imprisonment.
The Parkland shooting led to numerous lawsuits and legislative changes. Families of the victims, including Martin Duque Anguiano's family, filed lawsuits against the school district, the sheriff's office, and other entities, alleging negligence and failures in preventing the tragedy. These legal actions sought accountability and aimed to bring about changes to improve school safety and prevent future incidents.
The shooting also sparked a nationwide movement for gun control, led by survivors and families of the victims. This movement, known as "March for Our Lives," advocated for stricter gun laws and policies to enhance school safety. The tragic loss of Martin Duque Anguiano and the other victims of the Parkland shooting continues to resonate, driving efforts to create a safer environment for students across the United States.
