Thomas Anthony Hunter, aged 41, tragically lost his life on January 18, 2017, in Naples, Florida. The circumstances surrounding his death were both shocking and grim. On the morning of January 18, the Collier County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a vehicle on fire at the end of 20th Avenue Northwest in Golden Gate Estates. Upon extinguishing the flames, firefighters discovered two badly burned bodies inside a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer.
These bodies were later identified as Thomas Anthony Hunter and his brother, Christopher Patrick Hunter, aged 36.
The Collier County Medical Examiner's Office determined that both brothers had suffered fatal gunshot wounds before their bodies were set ablaze. Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing gunshots the previous night, between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on January 17. Investigators found a spent 7.62 mm shell casing, consistent with an assault rifle, near the vehicle, along with rifle-type ammunition inside the SUV. Additionally, a bag of pills and a box of matches were discovered near the burned vehicle, indicating a possible drug-related motive.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Zachary Anderson, a 24-year-old resident of Golden Gate Estates. Anderson was already in custody at the Naples Jail Center on an unrelated probation violation charge when he was identified as a suspect in the double homicide. According to court documents, Anderson had been driving his mother's Kia Soul in the days leading up to the murders. On the night of January 17, Thomas Hunter's wife reported that the brothers had left their home to conduct a narcotics transaction. She mentioned that a man in a white or silver Kia Soul had visited their home to buy drugs but had forgotten his wallet, leading the brothers to follow him to his house.
Further investigation revealed that Anderson lived on the same block where the burned vehicle was found. The Sheriff's Office dive team later recovered Christopher Hunter's wallet from a nearby canal, further implicating Anderson in the crime. On May 17, 2017, Anderson was arrested and charged with third-degree murder, manslaughter, and arson. Later that year, in November, he was indicted by the Collier County Grand Jury on two counts of first-degree murder.
The case against Anderson painted a picture of a drug deal gone horribly wrong, resulting in the brutal deaths of Thomas and Christopher Hunter. The legal proceedings that followed were closely watched by the community, as the tragic loss of the Hunter brothers left a lasting impact on their family and friends.
