Alphonso Leon Griffin, a 29-year-old resident of Cantonment, Florida, tragically lost his life on the evening of July 23, 2016. Griffin was discovered with a gunshot wound in the yard of a residence located in the 200 block of Sheppard Street. Emergency medical services responded promptly, and he was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital. Despite the medical team's efforts, Griffin succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
The investigation into Griffin's death
quickly identified 19-year-old Marquis Derrell Bryant as the primary suspect. According to reports, Bryant and Griffin had engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated, resulting in Bryant shooting Griffin. Following the incident, Bryant fled the scene, prompting a manhunt by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. Bryant was apprehended in August 2016 and charged with first-degree premeditated murder, resisting an officer without violence, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.
The legal proceedings against Bryant culminated in a trial where he was convicted of second-degree murder by an Escambia County jury on December 15, 2017. The court sentenced Bryant to life in state prison for his role in Griffin's death. Additionally, Bryant faced a separate charge of bribery after he attempted to pay a law enforcement officer to secure his release following his arrest. This bribery charge resulted in an additional five-year prison sentence.
