Travon Rollins, a 16-year-old African American male from Tallahassee, FL, tragically lost his life on July 15, 2016. Travon, an upcoming junior at Rickards High School and a football player, was shot around 5:35 p.m. near his home on Tess Circle. The incident occurred while he was with a group of teens who were reportedly playing with a gun. The shooting was initially described by neighbors and friends as an unfortunate accident, stemming from the teens' reckless handling of the firearm.
Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, Travon succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.
The investigation into Travon's death revealed that the gun involved in the shooting was stolen from a security guard's vehicle. The firearm ended up in the hands of the teens, leading to the fatal accident. Travon's cousin, 15-year-old Cartrez Harvey, was charged with manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a delinquent. Harvey initially provided conflicting accounts of the events leading up to the shooting but eventually admitted to being in possession of the gun when it discharged. The police investigation determined that the shooting was not gang-related and that there was no argument or altercation prior to the incident.
