Oceanette Hampton, a 36-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on January 23, 2016, in Sanford, Florida. The incident occurred during a private party at the Cool Breeze Bar on Sipes Avenue. According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy in the vicinity heard a gunshot and found Oceanette Hampton lying on the floor. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting left her family and friends devastated, with her mother, Gertrude Hampton, expressing profound grief and a plea for anyone with information to come forward.
The investigation into Oceanette Hampton's death revealed that the shooting was the result of an altercation at the bar. James Pritchard Jr., a Winter Springs man, was initially charged with second-degree murder in connection with the incident. During the trial, it was disclosed that Pritchard Jr. had pulled out a gun after his wife got into an argument that escalated into a physical fight involving several people. Pritchard Jr. claimed that he fired the gun in self-defense because it was dark, he was outnumbered, and he felt threatened. However, prosecutors argued that even if Pritchard Jr. was punched, it did not justify the use of a firearm.
After deliberating for an hour, a Seminole County jury found James Pritchard Jr. guilty of the lesser charges of manslaughter and discharging a firearm in public. He was scheduled to be sentenced on May 15 by Circuit Judge Debra Nelson. The verdict brought some measure of justice to Oceanette Hampton's family, although the pain of losing her remained.
