John T. McArdle, aged 54, was tragically shot and killed by his roommate, Wade Hampton Turner III, at their home in Naples, Florida, on November 14, 2014. The incident occurred at their residence on Hollygate Lane. McArdle had moved into the home just two weeks prior to the shooting. On the night of the incident, neighbors reported hearing two gunshots and saw Turner surrender to deputies. Turner was found with a significant amount of blood and bone spatter on his body and clothing.
Deputies discovered McArdle's body on the living room floor, and Turner was arrested shortly after the shooting, charged with second-degree murder.
The case went to trial, and more than four years later, on January 11, 2019, Turner was found guilty of second-degree murder with a firearm. During the trial, the prosecution argued that Turner shot McArdle out of malice, while the defense claimed that Turner acted in self-defense. The prosecution presented evidence that McArdle was looking forward to a night out with his daughter and was not seeking a confrontation. Turner, on the other hand, testified that McArdle had been drinking excessively and became increasingly agitated, leading Turner to believe he was in danger. Turner admitted that he did not think McArdle was armed when he shot him and that he did not suffer any injuries until after he had shot McArdle twice.

Despite the guilty verdict, McArdle's family expressed that the trial's conclusion did not bring them the closure they had hoped for.
