Josue "Sway" Santiago, a 25-year-old resident of Ocala, Florida, tragically lost his life on June 2, 2013. Santiago, along with two other victims, Benjamin Larz Howard and Jerry Lamar Bynes Jr., was shot and killed outside a nightclub in Ocala. The incident stemmed from a prank that had deeply humiliated the shooter, Andrew Joseph "Punchy" Lobban. Lobban, who worked as a bouncer alongside the victims, had misfired a gun at a shooting range, and the incident was recorded and shared among his
colleagues. This led to relentless teasing, which Lobban found unbearable.
On the night of the shooting, Lobban and the victims were not on duty but were socializing at AJ's bar. As they left the bar, Lobban, harboring resentment from the prank, pulled out a 9-mm pistol and shot each of the men in the head. Santiago and Bynes were shot in the back of the head, while Howard was also fatally wounded. Lobban fled the scene but was later apprehended at his girlfriend's home. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and held without bail.
The legal proceedings that followed saw Lobban pleading guilty to the murders. He was sentenced to three concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the devastating impact of workplace bullying and the extreme consequences it can have. The families of the victims were left to grapple with their loss, and the community mourned the senseless violence that took the lives of three young men.
