Daniel E. Barnett, a 10-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on September 27, 2010, in Riviera Beach, Florida. Daniel was a victim of a horrific murder-suicide orchestrated by his stepfather, Patrick Alexander Dell. On that fateful night, Dell, who had a history of violent behavior and escalating threats, forced his way into the home he once shared with his estranged wife, Natasha Whyte-Dell.
Armed with a pistol, Dell fatally shot Natasha and four of her children, including Daniel, before taking his own life. The incident occurred in the early hours, around 2 a.m., marking one of the worst mass murder-suicides in Palm Beach County's history.
The relationship between Natasha Whyte-Dell and Patrick Dell had been tumultuous, marred by repeated instances of domestic violence and threats. Court records and police reports documented Dell's growing anger and violent tendencies over the years. Natasha had sought restraining orders against Dell and had filed for divorce multiple times, but each case was voluntarily dismissed. In December 2009, Dell's violent behavior escalated when he attacked Natasha with a knife, leading to his arrest on felony aggravated assault charges. However, he was only convicted of a lesser misdemeanor offense.
On the night of the murder-suicide, Dell's rage culminated in a deadly attack. He shot Natasha and her children, including Daniel, who was a student at Bethune Elementary School. The other victims were Diane Barnett, 13, Bryan Barnett, 14, and Javon Nelson, 11. A fifth child survived the attack but was critically injured. Dell spared his two youngest children, a one-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, before turning the gun on himself as police arrived at the scene.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the father of the deceased children filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), alleging negligence in handling the case and failing to protect the children from Dell's known violent behavior. The lawsuit highlighted the systemic failures that allowed Dell's threats and violent actions to go unchecked, ultimately leading to the devastating loss of life.
