Eugene Andrew Gregory, a 55-year-old Deputy Sheriff with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life on July 8, 1998, in Seminole, Florida. Deputy Gregory was responding to a distress call regarding shots fired at approximately 8:45 p.m. The incident began when the suspect, Alan Singletary, threatened his landlord with a weapon during an eviction attempt. Upon Deputy Gregory's arrival at the scene, he was met with immediate gunfire and was fatally shot.
Despite being able to radio for backup, the situation escalated into a prolonged and intense standoff.
The standoff lasted for 13 hours, during which Singletary fired several hundred rounds at the responding officers, wounding two additional deputies. The SWAT teams that arrived on the scene faced significant challenges in retrieving Deputy Gregory's body due to the continuous gunfire. It took over two hours for them to safely recover his body. The standoff concluded the following morning at around 10:00 a.m. when Singletary was shot and killed by law enforcement officers as he attempted to escape while still firing at them.
Deputy Gregory's death was a significant loss to the Seminole County community. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office for seven years. His dedication to his duty and his community was well recognized, and he was known for his quiet and reserved demeanor, earning the trust and respect of those he served. His wife, Linda Gregory, became an advocate for legal changes to allow law enforcement to take a more proactive approach toward individuals with mental health issues.
The incident involving Deputy Gregory did not lead to any further arrests or litigations, as the suspect, Alan Singletary, was killed during the standoff. The case was closed following the resolution of the standoff and the death of the suspect.
