In the late hours of March 5, 2022, a violent encounter in the Rocky Plains community of south Newton County left 29-year-old Charles Edward Stanley dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded on Harvey Wood Drive when a resident reported a suspicious man had stolen a vehicle and crashed it into a tree in her yard. When deputies arrived, they found Stanley unresponsive in the wrecked vehicle. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
