On the evening of February 13, 2021, the life of Freddie Wallace, a 24-year-old Black man, was cut short by gunfire in Savannah, Georgia. At approximately 9:30 p.m., Savannah Police officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 11900 block of White Bluff Road. They arrived to find Wallace suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Detectives immediately began investigating the homicide. Based on initial findings, they did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two males fleeing the area shortly after the gunshots. The police department sought information from the public to help identify those responsible for Wallace's death.
The investigation led to an arrest the following month. On March 26, 2021, authorities took 19-year-old Xavier Dennis into custody and charged him with murder.
A second suspect, Cameron Blige, was also identified and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. Court records revealed that at the time of the murder, Blige was on probation for a separate felony case that involved him firing a gun near a street.
The case against both men proceeded to a jury trial in Chatham County. The jury convicted Xavier Dennis, then 20, and Cameron Blige, 24, of felony murder for their roles in Freddie Wallace's death. In December 2022, a judge sentenced both men to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Dennis received an additional five-year sentence to be served concurrently. As of January 2023, both Dennis and Blige had filed appeals of their convictions.
