In the early morning hours of a summer day in Baltimore, Edmond Dabney, a 64-year-old Black or African American man, was walking with a female companion in the pre-dawn darkness. It was Sunday, June 3, 2012, at about 4 a.m., when their path crossed with that of a lone man at the intersection of Pimlico Road and Virginia Avenue. The stranger's initial approach was unassuming, asking if they had any money or, by another account, simply for a cigarette.
