In the late spring of 1902, a palpable tension settled over the small town of Adel, Georgia. On Thursday, May 22nd, Town Marshal W. A. Hyers, a male officer of the law, set out to serve a warrant for illegal gambling. His objective was a young man, only 18 years of age, who had run afoul of the local ordinances.
