In the spring of 2018, the community of Opelousas, Louisiana, was shaken by the violent death of a local man. Ricky Freeman, a 46-year-old African American male, was found shot on April 8th of that year. The incident occurred at the intersection of Common Street and Railroad Avenue, where Freeman was discovered lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. His sudden and tragic death marked a grim period for the city, being the third homicide in a relatively short span of time.
