On July 11, 2017, authorities in Detroit, Michigan, initiated a homicide investigation following the discovery of a deceased male on the city’s west side. The victim was identified as Thomas Woods, a 48-year-old African American man. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence located at 7845 Ashton Avenue, a residential street in the Warrendale neighborhood, where they found Woods. He had been the victim of a fatal assault, and his death was subsequently ruled a murder.
