Jeremiah K. Grant was a 19-year-old Black man whose life was cut short in Silsbee, Texas, in the summer of 2021.
In the early hours of June 2, 2021, an incident that began at the Buzzy Bee Convenience Store on Highway 96 S ended in his death. Around 12:30 a.m., Jeremiah was found lying in the roadway at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Pine Street. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by Silsbee police indicated the shooting was the result of an altercation that occurred during a drug-related transaction. Investigators determined that Jeremiah had been shot while inside a vehicle and was then pushed out onto the street. The investigation led to the identification of three suspects.
On June 18, 2021, authorities arrested 19-year-old Jacob Matthew Decuir at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was recovering from critical injuries he had also received in the shooting.
Decuir was charged with murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, tampering with physical evidence, possession of marijuana, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Police also arrested Bryce Pfeffer, 20, and Emily Rannols, 19. Both Pfeffer and Rannols were charged with murder and engaging in organized criminal activity. Their bonds were set at $700,000 each.
In early 2026, Bryce Pfeffer stood trial for his alleged role in Jeremiah's death. A jury acquitted Pfeffer of the murder charge but found him guilty of engaging in organized criminal activity, delivery of a controlled substance, and other related charges. As of early 2026, legal proceedings in the case continued.
