Joshua Adam Vaughn, a 36-year-old man from Sulphur Springs, Texas, tragically died on November 8, 2019, from a gunshot wound outside his North Hopkins home. The incident was part of a murder-suicide that stemmed from an ongoing feud between Vaughn and James Kilgore, a 60-year-old man from the same area. Vaughn was found deceased at approximately 3:07 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019, by deputies who responded to a call from his mother-in-law.
Judge Brad Cummings pronounced Vaughn dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Kilgore was identified as the suspect in Vaughn's death. Kilgore was found deceased from a gunshot wound in a remote location at Cooper Lake State Park the following day, November 9, 2019. The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office conducted a manhunt for Kilgore, involving multiple agencies, including the Sulphur Springs Police Department, Texas Rangers, and the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Posse. Despite the ongoing feud and multiple altercations between Vaughn and Kilgore, Vaughn's family believed they had reconciled their differences and were unaware of what led to the incident.
Joshua Vaughn was described as a cowboy with a generous heart who lived his life simply. He was a hardworking man who could be counted on and was always willing to help others. Vaughn and his wife, Nicole, had four children, and he was known for his love of spending time with his family and his community. Funeral services for Vaughn were held at First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, with a visitation held at West Oaks Funeral Home.
The tragic incident left the community in mourning, and a GoFundMe page was set up to support Vaughn's family. The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office asked the public to keep the families involved in their thoughts and prayers.
