On January 16, 2017, Sam Phillip Smith, a 28-year-old man from Haltom City, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Kroger store in Bedford, Texas. The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. when Smith was talking to another man about a door ding in the man's vehicle. The discussion escalated, and both men mentioned that they were armed.
