On April 29, 2008, James Scott Burns, a 39-year-old male Highway Patrol Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety, was tragically shot and killed near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 729 and Farm-to-Market Road 1969 in Marion County, Texas. Trooper Burns was shot by a driver he had stopped during a routine traffic stop.
