Patrol Officer David Wilburn Roberts, aged 23, was shot and killed on September 21, 1985, in Paris, Texas. He was a young and dedicated officer with the Paris Police Department, having served for two years. Officer Roberts was killed while attempting to apprehend suspects involved in an armed robbery.
The incident occurred when Officer Roberts stopped a vehicle matching the description of one used in a robbery at a Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Store.
As he was using his radio, one of the suspects exited the vehicle and shot him through the windshield, striking him in the neck. As Officer Roberts tried to exit his patrol car through the passenger door, the suspect approached and shot him three more times in the back.
A massive manhunt ensued, involving over 50 officers, including Texas Rangers and police officers from Lamar and Titus counties, search dogs, a helicopter, and two private airplanes. The suspects were eventually captured about eight hours later in a rural area near the Oklahoma border. They were taken into custody and later convicted of capital murder. The primary suspect was executed in 1997.
Officer Roberts was survived by his wife and son. His death was a tragic loss for his family, friends, and the community. He is remembered for his dedication and sacrifice in the line of duty.
