David Maxwell, a 20-year-old male from Kilgore, Texas, was one of five victims in the tragic Kentucky Fried Chicken murders that occurred on September 23, 1983. On that fateful evening, armed robbers abducted five people from the KFC restaurant in Kilgore and took them to a remote oil field road, where they were executed execution-style. The victims included David Maxwell, Joey Johnson , Monty Landers , Mary Tyler , and Opie Ann Hughes .
The case remained unsolved for over two decades
until DNA testing in 2001 pointed to two suspects: cousins Darnell Hartsfield and Romeo Pinkerton. Both men were already serving prison sentences for other crimes when they were arrested and charged with the murders in 2005. In 2007, Romeo Pinkerton pleaded guilty to five counts of murder and was sentenced to five concurrent life sentences. Darnell Hartsfield was convicted at trial in 2008 and also received five consecutive life sentences.
Despite the convictions, there has been ongoing speculation about the possibility of a third perpetrator, as DNA evidence indicated that one of the victims, Opie Hughes, had been sexually assaulted before being shot. The case has been a subject of numerous investigations and legal proceedings over the years, with the search for a third killer still ongoing.
