On December 25, 1929, a tragic incident occurred in Vernon, Texas, resulting in the death of John Haggard, a 9-year-old boy. John was one of six children who were found shot to death in their home. The incident also claimed the life of their father, J.H. Haggard, a 56-year-old tenant farmer. The family was living in poverty, and the father left a brief note indicating his despair and the deaths of his family.
