Chief of Police Hill J. Cates, aged 51, of the Huntsville Police Department in Texas, tragically lost his life on September 29, 1901. He was shot and killed while investigating threats made by a suspect. Chief Cates went to the suspect's home to question him about these threats, which ultimately led to his untimely death.
The suspect was initially charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, this decision was reversed in January 1902.
In April 1902, the suspect pled guilty to manslaughter and was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison.
Chief Cates had served the Huntsville Police Department for 12 years and was well-respected in his community. His dedication to law enforcement and his ultimate sacrifice are remembered and honored by those who knew him.
