Leo Hildebrand, a 52-year-old elementary school teacher, was tragically murdered on November 5, 1989, in his Alhambra home. Hildebrand, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was found beaten and strangled. His death was part of a series of murders committed by serial killer Juan Chavez, who targeted homosexual men in known meeting spots, went to their homes, robbed them, and then murdered them.
Chavez's killing spree began in July 1986 and continued until November 1989, during which he murdered five gay men, including Hildebrand.
Chavez, who was 33 years old at the time of his sentencing, was convicted of five counts of murder and sentenced to five life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. The other victims of Chavez's killing spree were Alfred Rowswell, Ruben Panis, Donald Kleeman, and Michael Allen Cates. Chavez was already serving time in Folsom State Prison on a kidnapping and robbery conviction when he was charged with the murders in November 1994.
