Larry Matthews, a 46-year-old Black man, was found dead near the railroad tracks in Paradis, Louisiana, when a railroad worker driving on the property spotted his body lying beside a pond on October 9, 2004. Investigators believed he had been there for roughly a day, the kind of lonely, unnoticed stretch of time that can swallow a person whole in a place where freight lines run and nobody expects to find someone motionless in the grass.
