Juan Villanueva, a 53-year-old inmate at North Kern State Prison in Delano, California, was found unresponsive in his cell on the morning of February 24, 2023. Villanueva had been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old. He had been transferred to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation custody on February 2, 2023.
His cellmate, 51-year-old Ramon Escobar, was serving multiple life sentences for several counts of first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Escobar, originally from El Salvador, had been convicted of killing his aunt and uncle in Texas before moving to California, where he murdered five homeless individuals in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
On the morning of Villanueva's death, an officer conducting a routine security check discovered him unresponsive in his cell. Prison staff attempted life-saving measures and transported him to the prison's triage and treatment area, but he was pronounced dead at 9:03 a.m. Officials immediately restricted movement in the housing unit to facilitate an investigation. The Kern County District Attorney's Office, the Kern County Coroner, and the Office of the Inspector General were notified to determine the cause of death. The coroner's office was tasked with officially confirming the circumstances surrounding Villanueva's passing.
Escobar later admitted to strangling Villanueva, citing his cellmate's poor hygiene and refusal to clean their shared space as motives for the attack. He reportedly left a written note detailing his grievances, stating that Villanueva refused to shower, clean the cell, or move when asked. Escobar allegedly told a prison officer, “Hey, I'm sorry Jenkins, I killed him,” when confronted about Villanueva's death. The assault lasted approximately five minutes, according to reports. Escobar was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and assault by a life prisoner with force likely to produce great bodily injury. A judge ruled that Escobar would stand trial for the murder, with proceedings initiated in Kern County.
Villanueva's death was classified as a homicide, and investigations into the incident continued. The case drew attention due to Escobar's violent history and the circumstances surrounding the killing.
