Known affectionately as "Turtle" due to his quickness, Melton was a familiar figure in the Venice community, often seen with his Husky, Max. He resided in a tent community near the park and was recognized for his protective nature and friendly demeanor.
On the night of the incident, Melton intervened in an argument between a young woman and a man later identified as 26-year-old Tyrone "Prince Thomas" Jones, a registered sex offender with a history of violent offenses. In the course of defending the woman, Melton was shot in the head and died instantly. The suspect fled the scene in a silver Maserati, which was later found abandoned nearby. Despite an intensive search, including a SWAT team operation at a local apartment building, Jones remains at large.
Melton's death has deeply affected the Venice community.
