Cuauhtemoc Garcia Zuniga, a 66-year-old Latino male, was tragically killed in Cerritos, California, on February 25, 2025. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when Cuauhtemoc Garcia Zuniga was exiting his vehicle near the Coyote Creek Bike Path, behind 13121 Briarwood Street, close to Don Knabe Park. He had intended to take a walk when two individuals attempted to steal his car. When he refused to hand over his keys, the suspects shot him multiple times, resulting in his death.
The formal pronouncement of death was made at 12:52 p.m. that same day.
Authorities later identified the suspects as siblings John Chong-Uk Moon, 54, and Cindy Kim, 58, both of Korean descent. The pair had been living in a Toyota Prius at the time of the crime. Following an investigation, law enforcement officials were able to locate the suspects on March 10, 2025. Officers from the Fullerton and Anaheim Police Departments attempted to apprehend them, but the siblings refused to surrender and led police on a pursuit before they were eventually stopped and taken into custody.
On March 12, 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that John Chong-Uk Moon and Cindy Kim had been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted second-degree robbery. If convicted on all charges, both suspects could face life in prison. The arraignment hearing took place at the Bellflower Courthouse, where officials emphasized the senseless nature of the crime. The District Attorney described the incident as a brutal act of violence that took the life of a husband, father, and businessman who simply wanted to enjoy a peaceful walk. Authorities vowed to pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law to hold those responsible accountable.
