Hayden Lee Holt, a 20-year-old White man from San Antonio, was shot and killed on the evening of February 23, 2025, during what authorities described as a botched robbery attempt in Selma, Texas. His parents, Joanna and Carlos Holt, described their son as a non-violent person and believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people. They remain in shock, with his mother saying, “It just doesn’t seem real. I hear the door open. I think it might be him.”
The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. in the 16000 block of Retama Crown. According to police affidavits, Holt had traveled from San Antonio to Selma with a group that included three 17-year-olds: Roberto Monreal, Dorian Camarillo, and Eric Sepeda. The teens allegedly planned to rob an 18-year-old, Joseph Harris, of a firearm he was selling. The confrontation escalated into a shootout, with more than 30 gunshots fired.
Holt, who was in a vehicle with the teens and did not appear to be armed, was fatally struck. Harris and another individual were also injured but survived.
Investigators arrested Monreal, Camarillo, and Sepeda shortly after the shooting. A fourth suspect, Joseph Harris, fled the scene. In March, the Texas Department of Public Safety placed Harris on its 10 Most Wanted fugitives list, and he was subsequently captured. All four were initially charged with capital murder.
His parents, Joanna and Carlos, have been left to grieve a loss that doesn't feel real. “I still go up (to his bedroom) and believe he’s supposed to be in there,” his father said. They have vowed to follow the legal proceedings closely to ensure that those responsible for their son’s death are held accountable.
Shortly after Harris’s arrest, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office rejected the capital murder charge against him, and a grand jury later indicted him for evading arrest. In May 2025, a grand jury indicted Monreal, Camarillo, and Sepeda on charges of first-degree murder, which were reduced from the initial capital murder charges. As of May 2025, the three teenagers are awaiting trial for murder, and Harris is awaiting trial on the evading arrest charge.
